Treatment for Small Intestine Cancer---By: Yilin Zhang

Intro of treatment: Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a treatment that uses powerful chemicals to kill and stop fast-growing cancer cells. Chemotherapy is the most common treatment for cancers. Many different chemotherapy drugs are available and can be used alone or in combination to treat a variety of cancers. Though chemotherapy is the quickest way to treat cancer, it also carries a risk of side effects.

Chemotherapy for Small Intestine Cancer:

Chemotherapy for small intestine cancer is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle. The drugs enter the bloodstream and can kill cancer cells throughout the body. Some of the chemo medicines include capecitabine, 5-FU, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan. In combination with other treatments, chemo can reduce the tumor’s size before surgery or destroy the remaining cancer cells after surgery.

Supportive Care:

Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy are closely monitored through regular blood tests, imaging scans, and symptom management. Symptom management includes appropriate pain relief, nausea control, and diarrhea control using medications. Nutritional support includes ensuring proper nutrition diets and oral supplements. Finally, patient emotional support includes counseling, participating in support groups, and promoting love and encouragement from family and friends.

Personalization of Treatment:

Chemotherapy treatments for small intestine cancer vary depending on the patient’s cancer stage. The very first step is to proceed with genetic and molecular profiling. The results will help identify specific therapies and drugs used in the treatment. Lastly, a personalized treatment plan will be developed based on each patient’s circumstance.

Future Direction:

With regular monitoring and checkups, treatments might adjust accordingly. Regular exams and tests are still required for cancer survivors to prevent the risk of cancer coming back. Using immunotherapy can also help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells in the future. Most importantly, finding emotional support can benefit both a patient’s mental and physical well-being.
