Treatment for GISTs---By: Sheeveda Govula

Writer: luminaryhopeforcanluminaryhopeforcan

One common treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) is the use of a targeted therapy drug called imatinib (Gleevec). Imatinib works by blocking the abnormal proteins produced by mutated genes in GIST cells, which helps to stop the tumor from growing or even shrink it. This treatment is particularly effective for GISTs that cannot be surgically removed or have spread to other parts of the body. Patients often take imatinib as a pill daily, and it has significantly improved outcomes for many people with GISTs, making it a cornerstone of GIST treatment.
