The importance of GI cancer screening---Yiling Zhang

Writer: luminaryhopeforcanluminaryhopeforcan

GI cancer screening is essential because it helps detect cancer early before symptoms appear. Early detection of GI cancer can also lead to a higher survival rate, less invasive treatments, and more curable. In July 2024, the FDA approved the Shield blood test for colorectal cancer screening. This simple blood test is able to detect tumors in the colon or rectum with 87% accuracy. Another advancement is screening is the usage of AI colonoscopy. AI can help identify potentially dangerous colon polyps, making colonoscopies more effective. Studies have also shown that using AI colonoscopy can increase the detection of polyps by 13%. It reduces the risk of missing a detection up to 50%. The 5-years survival rate for GI cancer can reach 95-99% when it was diagonised in an early stage. In countries with higher rate of GI cancer, implemention of regular national screening tests can significantly increase the rate of early diagnosis. Another reason early detection benefits is because the early stages of GI cancers often have no symptoms at all. Patients only began to feel pain or discomfort in advanced stages.
