When Allie Bertocchini was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41 in 2019, the fear of the future also approached her. The fear about what was happening, what could happen, and fear of the unknown struck Allie. As she began her medical treatment at City of Hope, Allie was struck by the hundreds of cancer patients from all ages, nationalities, and various stages. Ever since then, Allie knew she was not alone; her doctors and the other patients were all together in this process. Not only was Allie supported by her medical team, but her community also poured their love on her family. Allie and her family felt constantly supported and loved despite the challenges they were going through. However, even with the great amount of people helping Allie, she still experienced both emotional and physical pain through her treatment. Still, Allie had hope. All the people that had come into Allie’s life because of her cancer became important people to her. After finishing three surgeries in a year, Allie survived breast cancer and continues to share her story with others. Many cancer patients today are still experiencing what Allie had gone through. Support and love from families, friends, and medical professionals are all valuable to any patient experiencing anxiety and depression. They cannot overcome this alone; they need support from their communities. Sometimes just sitting down and talking to a cancer patient can help them release the stress and express the fear within them. Don’t underestimate the simplest thing that can be done to help someone during their difficulties.
