Statistics about stomach cancer (GI Cancer) ---By: Chloe Hwang

Stomach Cancer Trends Over Time

In the United States, the number of new stomach cancer cases has been decreasing by about 1.5% annually over the past decade. In the early 20th century, stomach cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, but it has significantly dropped down the list since then. The exact reasons for this decline are not fully understood, but two key factors are believed to be influential:

The increased use of refrigeration for food storage has reduced the consumption of salted and smoked foods, which are known risk factors for stomach cancer.

There has been a decline in the number of people infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria, which is considered a major cause of stomach cancer.

While stomach cancer is less common in the US now, it remains more prevalent in other parts of the world, particularly East Asia, and continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally.
