P

roper nutrients can significantly support GI cancer recovery. Many GI cancer patients experience weight loss because of the inability to digest and absorb nutrients properly. A well-balanced diet can improve recovery and even life after the treatment. Beneficiary foods for GI cancer patients include lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and vitamin and mineral supplements. All the foods listed above can help repair tissues after surgery or provide sustained energy. Most importantly, they can manage side effects caused during a patient’s treatment. For instance, low-fiber foods can be more tolerable for patients experiencing diarrhea. Supplements such as Vitamin B-12 help make blood cells and provide necessary vitamins when food intake is insufficient. There are currently no perfect dietary plans for GI cancer. However, the ACS and NCI promote a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and plant-based foods. Specifically, research has shown that GI patients might benefit from a low-FODMAP diet. This diet reduces fermentable carbohydrates and gives your digestive system a rest. It helps remove the irritants and restore a healthy balance of gut flora.
