Rare cancer type: Appendix Cancer --- By: Joshua Kim

Writer: luminaryhopeforcanluminaryhopeforcan

Appendix cancer is rare, often diagnosed incidentally during appendectomy surgery for suspected appendicitis. The most common type is carcinoid tumors, which are slow-growing and often not detected until advanced stages. Risk factors for appendix cancer are not well understood, but genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis type 1 can increase the likelihood.

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, and unexplained weight loss, but these can often be attributed to other conditions. Diagnosis is typically confirmed through imaging tests, and a biopsy may be needed to determine the exact type of cancer. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the appendix and surrounding tissue. In advanced cases, chemotherapy may be used.

Because of the rarity of appendix cancer, there is limited awareness and research. However, those diagnosed with the disease have a relatively good prognosis if caught early.
