One Minute Read: Understanding Esophageal Cancer---By: Lui Xiao

One Minute Read Series:

Esophageal cancer begins in the lining of the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. It can be categorized as either squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma, depending on the type of cell it starts in. Risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic acid reflux.

Symptoms often include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and unintended weight loss. As the tumor grows, swallowing can become painful, leading to significant discomfort. Early detection through endoscopy is essential for a better prognosis.
