One Minute Read: Rectal Cancer---By: Sarah Kim

Rectal cancer develops in the last several inches of the colon, known as the rectum. It shares many similarities with colon cancer, including risk factors such as smoking, obesity, and a diet high in red or processed meats.

Symptoms include rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, and persistent abdominal pain. Diagnosis usually involves colonoscopy and biopsy.

Treatment often includes surgery to remove the tumor, sometimes followed by chemotherapy or radiation. Screening is essential for early detection, especially for individuals over the age of 50 or with a family history of colorectal cancer.
