One Minute Read: Pancreatic Cancer Basics---By: Jaemin Jang

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of GI cancer because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. It begins in the tissues of the pancreas, which aids digestion and regulates blood sugar.

Symptoms may include jaundice, weight loss, and upper abdominal pain. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, and a family history of the disease. Early detection is challenging due to the pancreas’s deep location in the abdomen.

Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the tumor, but many cases are inoperable at diagnosis. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often used to slow the progression. Clinical trials for new treatments, including targeted therapies, offer hope for some patients.
