
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST)
- A type of cancer in the digestive system.
- Often happens in the stomach and small intestine.
- This cancer can happen in people at any age, most commonly in adults.
- Treatment is best depending on the situation but doctors most likely recommend surgery
or targeted drug therapy.
- 4,000 and 6,000 people in the U.S receive a GIST diagnosis.
What causes GIST?
The cause of most GISTs isn’t known. But likely because of familial GIST syndrome,
neurofibromatosis type 1, and carney-stratakis syndrome.
- Abnormal cells multiply and develop into tumors.
Symptoms:
It is not easy for people to observe they have GIST if the tumors are small. People oftenly realize they have GIST when tumors start growing or they have to do a test.
Symptoms when tumors are growing:
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Feel full even if you only eat a small amount of food.
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting blood
Can GIST come back?
Yes, although some GISTs can be removed by surgery, there is still a lot of risk that it will come
back and their doctors will let you take imatinib.
Habit to prevent getting GIST:
- Eat healthy
- No drinking high amount of water
- No smoking
- Stay healthy weight
Nothing helps if it is a historical reason.
