Emotional Challenges Faced by Cancer Patients---By: Fatima Khan

Being diagnosed with cancer is a life-altering experience that brings significant emotional challenges. Many patients face intense psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, following their diagnosis. Studies have shown that anxiety is one of the most prevalent emotional responses, fueled by uncertainty about the future, fear of physical pain, and concern for loved ones. Depression can also set in, often stemming from feelings of hopelessness and isolation (Al-Azri etal., 2009).

Anxiety and Depression

The initial diagnosis of cancer can lead to shock, disbelief, and denial. As reality sinks in, anxiety often takes hold, manifesting in physical symptoms such as rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. Patients worry about treatment outcomes, financial strain, and lifestyle changes. Depression is also common, characterised by persistent sadness, lack of interest in activities, and withdrawal from social interactions (Karabulutlu et al., 2010).

A study found that these emotional challenges are often exacerbated when patients lack effective coping mechanisms or social support (Milligan et al., 2018). Unresolved psychological stress can also weaken the immune system, making it harder for patients to cope with physical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation (Fischer et al., 2010).
