Emotional and Psychological Support

Seeking professional support from psychologists or counsellors can be pivotal in helping patients navigate their emotional turmoil. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is one such approach that helps cancer patients manage their thoughts and emotions, particularly anxiety and depression. Support groups also provide an outlet for sharing fears and experiences with others undergoing similar journeys (Nipp et al., 2016).


Problem-Focused Coping

Instead of focusing on emotional distress, some patients adopt problem-focused coping strategies. These include gathering information about their diagnosis and making informed decisions about treatment options. Active participation in treatment planning can reduce feelings of helplessness, promoting a sense of control and purpose (Spiegel, 1996).


Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises are effective for reducing stress and anxiety in cancer patients. These techniques encourage individuals to focus on the present moment, preventing their minds from dwelling on worst-case scenarios. Regular relaxation exercises can improve both mental well-being and physical resilience (Jankowska-Polańska et al., 2020).
