Ablation and Embolization for GISTs---By: Sheeveda Govula

Ablation involves destroying the tumor using extreme heat, cold, or radiofrequency energy. Techniques like radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or microwave ablation target the tumor directly, causing it to shrink or disappear without the need for surgery. This approach is often used for smaller tumors or those located in areas where surgery might be risky.

Embolization involves blocking the blood vessels that supply the tumor, effectively starving it of the nutrients it needs to grow. This can be done by injecting tiny particles, coils, or a gel-like substance into the blood vessels feeding the tumor. Sometimes, embolization is combined with delivering chemotherapy drugs directly to the tumor, enhancing the treatment's effectiveness.

Both ablation and embolization offer alternatives to traditional surgery, providing options for patients with advanced or complex GIST cases.
